King Paimon
King Paimon
King Paimon is the Ninth Spirit of the Goetia, a Great King, and very obedient unto Lucifer. He appears in the form of a man sitting upon a camel with a crown upon his head. He teaches all arts and Sciences and other secret things. He giveth good familiars, and such as can teach all arts.
King Paimon History, Mythology, and Lore
Paimon is an odd duck. Er, demon. He is a classical demon, in the sense that he is not a former god being re-skinned. He was always a demon—never a god fallen on hard times. Even with this in mind, there is some disagreement about his origins and associations, some even imply divine origins.
Mathers, founder of the Golden Dawn, went so far as to conflate Paimon with Azazel, who we have already discussed at length in previous entries. Both are associated with the desert or trappings of the desert (Paimon on camelback, Azazel’s association with desolate places etc.) and are associated with forbidden knowledge.
The Ars Goetia calls Paimon a bit of a suckup where ol’ Lucifer is concerned, possibly another reference to Azazel. Some things never change. Hierarchies breed sycophants and tyrants in equal measure.
Troublingly, the Lesser Key of Solomon lists Paimon as a possible ex-Dominion (raising hilarious images of him being a former Cherub/Dominion, which is something anyone would want off of their cosmic resume).
Paimon is associated with the following elements: Paimon’s favored color is yellow, his favored celestial body the sun, his favorite plant is the sinister-sounding bindweed and his associated element is water. Fitting as Paimon can be seen as kindly wishy-washy. Goddamn Geminis.
The Dictionary Infernale has this to say about Paimon:
Paimon is credited in the Abramelin as having the domain of secrets, the future and the past, whistling up helper spirits, and various associated tricks. One that sticks out is the ability to stay underwater without air without real discomfort—you know, like all seekers of arcane truths!
He of course shows up, seemingly at random, in the modern horror film, Hereditary—in much the same way that Pazuzu features in The Exorcist a generation previous. It presents him largely accurately in the film.
The overall feel of Paimon is that of a slightly flustered school headmaster. He is skilled at granting all hidden knowledge, but also manages lesser demons with the same job, and thus is constantly in a bit of a flustered state. Bebal and Abalam really don’t help with their master’s overall stress-level.
